The Swedish Midsummer Celebration Video

Tomorrow every man, woman and child in Sweden will be celebrating the Swedish Midsummer which is the most anticipated holiday of the whole year. The Midsummer tradition dates back to the pagans and is therefore celebrated in a somewhat premature way. As The Local writes in there article The Lowdown on Swedish Midsummer the Swedes celebrate midsummer by eating raw fish, drinking copious amounts of vodka and dancing round a big phallus while I pretend to be a frog.

This video is originally a commercial for IKEA about how they only brought the midsummer sales to their stores which we think is a pity since the video clearly shows what a nice tradition the Swedish midsummer really is.

To guide you through the four sections of the video we will here explain what is happening in each part separately.

1. The traditional dance
First of all you probably noticed the funny clothes the Swedish people are wearing while trying to raise the midsummer pole. The funny clothes are traditional outfits corresponding to the part of Sweden that you are from. Now the dancing begins, this is the part where the Swedes pretends to be small frogs, the song everyone is singing is called "Små grodorna" and in English this is means "the small frogs".

2. The Smorgasbord
The most important ingredient on the Swedish midsummer smorgasbord is the vodka which the Swedes drink in copious amounts to overcome their fear of talking to other Swedes, this tradition really eases up the mode of the party. Other than that there is no strange things on the smorgasbord, Swedes eat the same kind of food for every holiday since they are afraid of variation, which in Sweden is thought to be life threatening.

3. The Festivities
Now that everyone have gotten their fair share of Vodka it's time for the actual partying which have to take place outdoors to get that genuine feeling. Another reason for holding the parties outdoor is to eliminate the cleaning up phase the day after the party. The last scene in this part is the coupling between male and female that usually take place when the festivities is about to culminate in the late morning hours. Some facts connected to this coupling between male and female are: 9 month after midsummer is the period when most babies are born in Sweden, midsummer is when most couples hooked up, midsummer is the most common time for divorce thanks to cheating on your partner.

4. The Morning After
Not much to say, some Swedes does not cope well with vodka and get what is called "tupjuck" which basically means that they lose their minds. The other thing that we can see in this scene is someone who was unable to hookup with someone of the other sex and is now drowning his/her sorrows in even more vodka.

If anyone of you have any more questions about the Swedish midsummer feel free to ask them in the comments bellow and we will answer them as good as we can. Note that we are not mocking the Sweden and everyone working on vidly are Swedes, this article was written with a touch of irony and a large portion of truth.
