Most of us have at some point while preparing an onion wondered why onions make you cry, wonder no more because I will present the answer shortly.
First hit play to see the video explanation of why onions make you cry and then read the section below to fully understand the content of the video.
Ok so you have watched the video now and probably figured out that this was not an explanation to why you cry while slicing an onion, don't despair the section below is actually a description of what happens while slicing an onion.
When you slice through the onion you open a number of onion cells which holds enzymes inside them. When the cells are sliced open these enzymes escape and start decomposing other substances in the onion. These substances include amino acid sulfoxides which then form sulfenic acids which quickly vaporize into a volatile gas. When this gas reaches your eyes they react with the water and form a mild sulfuric acid which is irritating for the eye. The nerve endings in your eye picks up on this acid and tells your grain about it which responds by telling your tear ducts to crank up the production of water to dilute the acid in order to protect your eyes.
Hows that for an answer?
